Do You Have an Alcohol or Drug Problem?

Dependence and addiction are serious health problems that often develop quietly over the course of several months or years. Occasional substance abuse can often grow in frequency and intensity until it becomes a weekly, and sometimes daily, habit. If you suspect your drinking or drug habit has become a problem you can’t control, explore these signs and get the help you need. The Signs of Alcohol Abuse Although each person walks a different path to addiction and sobriety, certain signs nearly always appear in those with an alcohol abuse problem. Ask yourself:

  1. Has drinking ever affected your career or schoolwork, either because you missed time, lost motivation or failed to complete a task?
  2. Do you drink to feel more comfortable around other people, or to feel more confident?
  3. Have you noticed worsening problems with finances or relationships?
  4. Do you have new friends who like to party as much as you do?
  5. Do you behave irresponsibly when you drink, such as drinking and driving?
  6. Do you drink every day at the same times, or in the morning, and then become aggravated if alcohol isn’t available?
  7. Do you have a health problem such as depression?
  8. Do you drink alone?
  9. Have you ever suffered a memory blackout because of drinking?
  10. Do you have a close family member who has a drinking problem?
  11. Do you keep alcohol in unusual places, such as in your car or at your office?
  12. Do you continue drinking to avoid withdrawal?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to consider getting help. The Signs of Drug Abuse People who abuse drugs often demonstrate different symptoms than those who drink too much alcohol. You may be dependent on drugs if:

  1. You use prescription drugs when you don’t need to.
  2. You take more than one drug at a time, such as drinking alcohol with a painkiller.
  3. Your drug use has progressed from occasional to more than once a week.
  4. You keep using drugs to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
  5. Your drug use has negatively affected others’ perceptions of you, including your family and friends.
  6. Doing drugs is getting in the way of being successful at work, at school, with your finances and in your relationships.
  7. You break the law to get more drugs, such as stealing drugs from a family member or buying them on the street.
  8. You get more than one prescription for the same drug and fill it at multiple pharmacies — even though you know you shouldn’t — just in case you run out.
  9. Your physical and mental health is getting worse.
  10. You’ve tried to quit before but can’t seem to stop.
  11. You’ve progressed from taking a prescription drug such as OxyContin to buying an illicit drug such as heroin.
  12. You have a family history of addiction
