College Drug Addiction: What Should You Know?

College drug addiction is on the rise, according to data collected from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The survey found that in one year, more than nine million full-time college students might drink alcohol, often binge drinking it at parties. Many also use marijuana daily, as well as abusing stimulant drugs like Adderall. What should you know about college drug addiction?

College Drug Addiction Trends

Drug use ebbs and flows at the college level, but there is one constant for most — alcohol abuse. Drinking alcohol is a cultural phenomenon at this academic level. An estimated 1,500 college students die each year from alcohol-related injuries, including car crashes. In 2017, 9.6 percent of full-time students had alcohol use disorder, but not all were able to get treatment. Along with alcohol, there is evidence that hallucinogens, marijuana, and prescriptions that include Adderall are common on college campuses. They may also have access to party drugs such as LSD, mushrooms, and Ecstasy.

What Is Adderall?

Adderall is a medication that contains four kinds of amphetamine. The drug stimulates the central nervous system and is said to work as an athletic performance and cognitive enhancer. The stimulant nature of this drug makes it a popular choice for college students because it helps them stay alert.

What Leads to College Drug Addiction?

The triggers for addiction will vary from campus to campus and even from student to student. Some common factors include stress due to the demands of coursework, financial issues, and social obligations. The workload is another pressing concern for students and one of the primary reasons for taking a stimulant. Adderall helps them go without sleep for extended periods. For some, it’s pure curiosity. There are drugs and alcohol available on college campuses. It may be the first time students come in contact with some street drugs, and they try them to see what it’s like and if they enjoy it. For others, it is their first time away from their parents, giving them the freedom to try new things. Age likely plays a role in college drug addiction, as well. Young people at this age may not have the maturity to turn down chances to drink or get high. They may be more likely to give in to peer pressure, too.
