Healing From Shame and Addiction

Living with an addiction takes a tremendous toll on the addiction sufferers life. Aside from having to deal with personal problems, they also have to deal with feelings of shame. Healing from shame and addiction at the same time is a very tall order. It requires time, effort, and a complete commitment to the addiction treatment process. After getting treatment, the addiction sufferer will be in a better position to deal with outlying issues that the addiction created.

How to Start the Healing From Shame and Addiction

In the throes of addiction, the addiction sufferer does a lot of things they later regret. There’s almost always collateral damage and behaviors that many people might consider shameful. However, we have to remember that addiction is a disease. If we accept that premise, we should be willing to offer forgiveness for the addiction sufferer’s action. That’s where healing from shame and addiction starts. It’s also a big part of giving the addiction sufferer a little extra motivation to get the treatment they need. The idea that friends and loved ones would be willing to forgive their transgressions serves as encouragement that everything is going to be fine. We can hope they would seek help on their own. However, the idea forgiveness could remove shame and motivate someone to get help is an excellent second-best option.

Healing Yourself

To remove inward feelings of shame, it’s going to require more than the forgiveness of loved ones. The addiction sufferer also needs to be able to forgive themselves. That’s a critical process that usually takes place during treatment. During individual therapy, a client gets the opportunity to better understand the truth about their addiction. Once they begin to figure out they don’t have to carry all the blame for their illness, and shame begins to dissipate. The client can also get help from a program like the HEART group therapy program. In a group setting, they might recognize they aren’t alone and maybe aren’t that bad. In our The Ranch PA addiction treatment center in Hanover, PA, we have seen the power of forgiveness. We have seen clients release the shame and move towards a position of self-caring. These are the clients that seem to succeed in recovery. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.
