What Is Partial Hospitalization for Addiction Treatment?

If you or your loved one is facing drug and alcohol use, you may be unsure what steps to take to get help. What type of help is best? Generally speaking, the first step is to call our team to learn more about the services we offer at The Ranch PA. We will provide you with a full assessment and then make recommendations for care. For some people, partial hospitalization for addiction treatment is the best overall option.

What Is Partial Hospitalization for Addiction Treatment?

Often called day treatment, partial hospitalization for addiction treatment is a type of program designed to provide you with some outpatient addiction treatment. You will still engage with your therapist and work with other people receiving care. You also have access to medical care that you may need from time to time during care. Unlike drug detox treatment, you will not spend your time in a 100 percent medically monitored location. It is also different from residential drug treatment in which you will stay at the location full time for a series of weeks. In this type of care setting, you will work one-on-one with therapists on a schedule that you both agree to. Most of the time, our clients come in to see us three to five days each week. You will spend between four and six hours of receiving care during that time. Though each location and treatment is different, partial hospitalization for addiction treatment will include much of the care you would receive through inpatient programs. This may include:

  • Individual therapy with your therapist using evidence-based methods
  • Group counseling opportunities, including family counseling care if needed
  • Medical care and medication assistance as needed
  • Holistic treatment programs that address your needs
  • Support from your doctor, therapist, and mentors in a safe location

When Is Partial Hospitalization Best?

Not everyone should consider partial hospitalization for addiction treatment. For many men and women, stepping away from daily life and into a residential treatment setting where there is no access to drugs or alcohol is better. You may benefit from partial addiction treatment if you have:

  • A low-level of addiction and dependency
  • You do not require 24-hour supervision
  • A very stable home-life with support
  • You do not have cravings or withdrawal symptoms
  • You are a low-level risk for relapsing

It is best to work with your therapist to best understand what your unique goals are. Most men and women will find that partial hospitalization for addiction therapy can work if they are committed to receiving that care. You also cannot be in a rush to complete it.

What Should You Expect During Care?

During partial addiction treatment, you will still spend a lot of time working with your therapist and counselor to create a personalized treatment plan. This will include any evidence-based treatment, such as dialectical drug therapy and cognitive behavior therapy, along with holistic care, such as the use of music and art therapy. You can expect your care to continue until you regain the confidence to stop using it. Every person using these programs has different needs. With the help of your therapist, you can begin to work through complications in relationships and life using this program. Be aware, though, that it takes a lot of time and hard work to reach success.
