Staying Jolly: Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

As you prepare to deck the halls and celebrate the season, it’s important to remember that in addition to great company and fantastic food, the holidays can sometimes inspire stress and anxiety. Having a strategy to manage these uneasy feelings will help ensure you are able to take everything in stride and remain in control. Here are some tips to help keep you jolly this holiday season:

  • Take a Deep Breath It may sound simple, but when you’re starting to feel like a Grinch, the best first step is to relax and take a deep breath. Even though the holidays can be hectic, it’s important to make time for your favorite relaxation activity. Meditation or simply curling up with a good book can all be good strategies to keep you in a positive frame of mind.
  • Make a List & Check It Twice Keeping a list can be a great strategy to help you manage the many merry tasks on your plate. Be sure to consider which items on your list are truly a priority and always be realistic about what you’re able to accomplish.
  • Remember: It’s Okay to Say “No Thanks” One of the most important ways to keep your holiday stress under control is to remember that you’re only one person and there are only so many hours in a day. It’s OK to refuse invitations from co-workers, family and friends to help keep your holiday dance card in check.
  • Ask For Help The holidays are a time when family and friends come together. Rely on the important people in your life when things get stressful. Surround yourself with a strong support system who can help you through any holiday uncertainty.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember as you navigate the busy holiday season is that there are bound to be some things that you can’t control. For those times when you feel overwhelmed, rely on your support system and take some time to relax and unwind.
