A Dangerous New Trend – Synthetic Marijuana

Sold right at the front counter as “incense” and called K2 or Spice on the street, synthetic marijuana use has been steadily gaining popularity as a legal alternative to many other drugs on the market. Unfortunately, its legality is causing people to fail to realize the serious consequences associated with the use of this dangerous drug.

Synthetic marijuana is created when plants are soaked in chemicals that mimic the effects of THC, but many times, the effects are much more potent. Because it is not sold for ingestion, it is not regulated by the FDA, meaning that each bag of “incense,” sold for upwards of $50 per packet, can differ depending on where and who it is purchased from.

Negative effects associated with the ingestion of this drug include hallucinations, seizures, and over 1,500 emergency room visits alone last year, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Dangerous chemicals including formaldehyde and acetone have also been found in tested packets of the incense.

Currently, over a dozen states have banned the use of this drug and many others, including Pennsylvania, are in the process of enacting laws to ban the substance as well. There are also federal laws taking root including House Bill 176, which would make these synthetic cannaboids in the state of Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, people believe that if a substance is not illegal, it is somehow less dangerous. Synthetic marijuana has both short and long-term consequences and should be treated with the same seriousness as any other drug.
