What to Expect During Alcoholism Detox

What to Expect During Alcoholism Detox

For most people, there is a certain amount of mystery surrounding alcohol detox. What does it mean? What does it feel like? Should you be worried if you or your loved one is going to alcohol detox?

The answer to that last question is no. While it is not easy, medically supervised alcohol detox is a safe and necessary part of getting on the path to sober living. During detox, our clients undergo a healing experience that often helps them discover strength they never recognized before.

Here is a deeper look at what to expect during alcoholism detox, including:

  • Alcohol detox symptoms
  • Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal

Alcohol Detox Symptoms

During alcohol detox, we offer our clients a highly individualized program that meets their particular needs. If, for example, you or your loved one responds well to alternative treatment, we will emphasize such methods to help deal with alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Physical symptoms may include:

  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Racing heart
  • Vomiting

Mental symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may include:

  • Confusion
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety

However, keep in mind every person suffering from alcohol addiction is different. You or your loved one may not experience any of these symptoms. However, you or your loved one could also encounter all of them and more.

There are technical explanations for the occurrence of these withdrawal symptoms, but basically the reason is this: Once someone has become dependent on alcohol, it messes with their body chemistry to suddenly remove the substance. That is why, at Clarity Way, we rely on compassionate, gradual alcohol detox to make our clients feel as comfortable as possible.

What Happens During Withdrawal

It is important to address the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of someone undergoing alcohol withdrawal. At our facility, we offer a lot of one-on-one attention to assist our clients through the detox process. During this time, our clients may try traditional and group therapy, begin a 12-step program, or receive neurobiofeedback, which may help clients manage the symptoms of alcohol detox.

Many of our clients and their families wonder how long detox will take. There is no single answer. Just as each detox program is individualized, so is the amount of time detox will take. It is smart to go into it without expecting a specific time period. It will take as long as necessary, and it will help lead to lasting sobriety.

Some people in detox report smaller appetites and physical exhaustion. Others find themselves energized after a few days. There is no one typical experience.

Use a Professional Detox Facility

If you or a loved one are considering undergoing alcohol detox, it is important to use a professional facility. Detox should be medically monitored by doctors, nurses, and others who know how to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms and ease the sometimes uncomfortable moments.
